Are you looking into making a big difference in life? By pursuing a volunteer opportunity at Rest Haven you’ll not only change the way that you live the rest of your life but you’ll make a difference in the lives of the loved ones we care for as well.

But, you need to be careful. You may be in for a journey of a lifetime.

As a volunteer you’ll bring a sense of joy and a feeling of family into the lives of some of the thousands of people we serve. The life of a Rest Haven volunteer is filled with unique opportunities. You’ll have moments throughout each and every day to enrich the lives and well-being of the sick and elderly. When you lose yourself in serving others, often times you remain dedicated to doing so for the rest of your life. Our volunteers certainly are part of a wonderfully passionate service. And for many, it becomes a lifelong service.

Take Sis DeYoung, for instance. She’s volunteered at Rest Haven South since the building opened in 1978. She has 5 children, 20 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. And, she can name them all! She’s also been married for 64 years. She’s a part of a large loving family and still makes time to share her love with others.

Sis has volunteered at Rest Haven South for the past 26 years! She calls Bingo and bakes with the residents, but she does even more than that. Whether she plays a game, talks, prays, or gives a hug to a resident who needs one, Sis’ finest quality is her ability to keep our residents happy.

For Sis, Rest Haven was an easy choice to dedicate part of her life to.

“There are other places to go to live, but there aren’t other places that offer loving Christian care like here,” she said. “This has been a big part of my life and it gives me something to live for. Some want to get paid, but my rewards are in heaven.”

Rest Haven undoubtedly values volunteers, but they are adored and depended on by the most important people in our organization—our Senior Saints. Our residents not only look to our volunteers for fun and engaging activities, but they look to you for friendship, companionship and consider you part of their family.
Volunteers are an influential part of We’re Part of Great Lives. Are you interested in becoming a part of their life as a volunteer?

One of the best things about volunteering at Rest Haven is the fact that we can fit in anyone’s schedule. Whether you only have a few minutes per day, an hour or two a week, or only one day a month or a couple times during the year. It doesn’t really matter. What matters are that you care and can make a difference in our residents’ lives.

Our facilities have a variety of different volunteers. A Rest Haven volunteer could be someone who simply calls some residents on the phone during the week to talk about a variety of topics, including their well being. Or, it could be someone who volunteers more extensively, spending a couple hours, a few days during the week, helping the CNAs with a variety of tasks.

What other kinds of volunteers does Rest Haven have?

The dictionary says that a volunteer is someone who gives help, does a service, or takes an obligation voluntarily. That’s what our volunteers do, but it’s also the kind of help, service and obligations that aren’t always necessarily defined, and they don’t need to be either.

Would you like to help assist our staff in a variety of ways?

Are you a former English professor that could come into a facility once a month to teach our residents how to write their life story?

Are you an artist who could come into a Rest Haven facility and teach our residents how to watercolor paint?

Do you have a hobby that you simply would like to share? Playing chess, checkers, or an all-time favorite board game like Monopoly or Trivial Pursuit? It might not sound like much on paper, but companionship can make life grand for many of our loved ones.

As we said, nothing has to be defined.

Maybe you’re skeptical about volunteering because you don’t know what you do at Rest Haven? Maybe you’re simply a loving and caring person that wants to offer your time, love and compassion to our residents for a variety of reasons? Maybe to help a specific volunteer activity? Maybe under the instruction of a CNA or someone else to help the residents with their daily activities?
That’s something we can discuss later in more detail. If you want to make a difference in the lives of seniors then you’re coming to us for all the right reasons—everything else will certainly fall perfectly into place.

We won’t limit ourselves.

I don’t know if you’d call it volunteering, but it’s certainly close enough. Are you the leader of a boy scouts or girl scouts group? The director of a choir? Or, the playwright for a school play? Leader of junior high band? Maybe you’d like to entertain our residents? Maybe you’d like Rest Haven to serve as your test audience? Or maybe you’re part of a trio that wants to sing Christmas Carols and you’d like to sing to our residents? Volunteer services do not necessarily have to be defined. Our residents, just like you, enjoy a variety of different things. So if you have a group and believe it would make a good impression on our residents then certainly let us know about it.

We owe a great deal to our volunteers over the years. They’ve become an integral part of Rest Haven’s success and the happiness, love and affection they share has made us one big happy family.

Rest Haven also understands that we wouldn’t be able to provide quality senior care without the constant devoted contributions of volunteers. We can have activity staff, CNAs, cooks, administration and so many other members of staff, but it’s these varying roles that volunteers play that provide spontaneity in the lives of our residents.

Answering the call…

We know you probably have a yearning from deep within to make a difference in the lives of the elderly. In fact, you’re answering a call from God to learn more about us. You’re inspired enough to think about volunteering and we would love to learn more about your goals. We know that part of volunteering is reaching one’s own personal fulfillment. If we can help you in anyway, please do not hesitate to contact us.

You are appreciated every minute, every day.

We can’t thank our volunteers enough. We do host an annual recognition luncheon that is dedicated entirely to our volunteers. We specifically recognize your contributions at this time, but appreciate your honesty, love, dependability, integrity and compassion every day you spend with us. As a volunteer, you will also receive meals and other special privileges depending upon the facility where you volunteer.

For further comments, questions or suggestions please fill out this brief information form. Feel free to explain how you would like to offer volunteer services and if you have a preference of working at a specific facility.
