REST HAVEN CAMPUSES HONOR VETERANS ON FLAG DAY

SOUTH HOLLAND, Ill. (Friday, June 2, 2006) – The public is invited to a Flag Day ceremony on the front lawn of Rest Haven South on Wednesday, June 14, at 10:00am. Following the service, guests will have an opportunity to receive a free American flag and an apple pie when they tour neighboring Holland Home. “We recognize what generations of veterans have done for us,” says Matt Mauthe, Administrator at both campuses, “and we want to promote that kind of love of country among today’s families.”

State Representative David E. Miller is planning to attend the event, and South Holland Mayor Don DeGraff has been invited as well.

Dallas Roberts, Veteran Commander of South Holland Post #883 has made arrangements to bring a contingent of local veterans to participate in the ceremony. “We’re hoping the veterans will honor us with the traditional three rounds of gun volley,” says Sally Rock, Activities Director at Rest Haven South, referring to what many people mistake for a 21-gun salute. “Getting ready for this program, I recently learned that an official 21-gun salute is reserved as a greeting or welcome for visiting dignitaries—and there’s a whole history of significance behind that number. But the three volleys of gunfire at a gathering like this are a separate tradition. Either way, we’re excited that our local veterans are willing to be involved.”

Chaplain Hank Elgersma, chaplain at Rest Haven South and neighboring Holland Home, will begin the service at 10:00am. Following his meditation, local entertainer Arlene-Marie, a well-loved performer at Rest Haven South, will lead the crowd in singing a number of patriotic songs. Rest Haven South will serve light refreshments after the service, while Holland Home staff escort people who choose to tour the campus and receive a flag and pie.

Rest Haven South is located at 16300 Wausau Avenue in South Holland, Illinois. Holland Home is located one street east, at 16400 Louis Avenue in South Holland. For more information, call 708-596-5500.
