SOUTH HOLLAND, Ill. (Sunday, August 13, 2006) - Two years ago, Mary Jane (“Polly”) Moffat decided it might be time to move into a nursing home. She was 103 at the time. On August 13 this year she will turn 105.
“Well, ah never drank ohr smoked, thot’s the main thing,” explains Moffat in a twinkling-eyed Scottish brogue (although her son-in-law acknowledges she engages in a traditional “nip o’ scotch” now and then). At Rest Haven South, Moffat’s current residence, she limits her indulgences to a “good cuppa hot tea-but it hess to be hot!”

Born in Scotland in 1901, Mary Jane Moffat and her fiancé set their sights on America because they believed it was a land of opportunity. They married after arriving here, and celebrated more than 60 years together before he passed away. Moffat has also outlived her seven younger sisters and her two children.
Unimpressed by her own longevity, Polly Moffat shrugs off other people’s amazement. “Oh, jes’ let it pass,” she says with a wave of her hand.
“She really is amazing though,” says Sally Rock, Activities Director at Rest Haven South. “She participates in the exercise program every day, she plays bingo, she enjoys the musical programs, and she attends the monthly tea parties. And she’s just very sweet.”
“I would love to have half her energy at half her age!” says Rock.
