Zeeland, Mich. (Friday, June 15, 2007) Harold “Blue” Blauwkamp appreciates the life he’s had at Royal Atrium Inn, an Assisted Living community in Zeeland. He’s lived there for more than a year now, and though he’s been a member of the Chick-Owa Sportsman’s Club since 1947, Blue assumed Assisted Living meant his hunting days were over.
“I remember meeting him in the hallway soon after he moved into Royal Atrium Inn,” says Jeff Zylstra, Administrator. “He was on his way to the storage room, where he was going to store his hunting gear. We talked for a while, and he admitted that he was going to miss not only hunting but also the male bonding at the Chick-Owa.” Zylstra didn’t have an immediate solution for Blauwkamp, but he kept that hallway conversation in the back of his mind.
Three weeks ago, Zylstra ran into an old friend, Tom Medendorp, and learned that Medendorp knew Blauwkamp through their mutual membership at Chick-Owa. Zylstra shared with Medendorp how much Blauwkamp missed hunting. Medendorp thought he had a solution: a virtual fowl hunting game. He asked Zylstra if he could bring the game to the Atrium and “hunt” with Blue.
Zylstra loved the idea and wanted to implement it in time for Fathers Day. He called the Blauwkamp family and made arrangements for Blue’s two sons and six grandsons to go virtual hunting with Medendorp and his son in the Royal Atrium Inn Activity Center at 6:00pm last night, the Thursday before Fathers Day.
“I think everyone had a lot of fun,” says Zylstra. “I’m glad all the details worked out so we could make this a truly special Fathers Day for Blue.”
