South Holland, Ill. (September 13, 2007) – Evelyn Stooksbury remembers when nurses wore caps and CNAs didn’t need to be licensed. “Things were different back then,” she laughs.
“Back then” was February of 1973, when South Holland’s Holland Home had just opened, offering retirement living to 300 local seniors. Evelyn accepted a position as a nursing assistant on the midnight shift. “They needed help a couple nights on the night shift,” remembers Evelyn. “So I said I could help out a couple nights. Well, that was 34 years ago!” The last employee remaining from staff hired at that time, Evelyn retired this summer after 34 years.
The night shift (11:00pm – 7:00am) fit Evelyn’s schedule perfectly. She could have supper with her young family, tuck her children in to bed, and head off to work. She would return the following morning in time to help the kids with breakfast and see them to the school bus before going to bed herself.
Evelyn’s work philosophy was always to try and see things from the residents’ point of view: “’Be thoughtful and kind,’ that’s what I keep in mind. You never know what someone is going through.”
Administrator Deana Wilson has great respect for staff like Evelyn who contribute to the stability and faithfulness Holland Home represents. “There is a lot of history here,” says Deana.
“Evelyn is just one more example of the depth of commitment Holland Home has to seniors.”

Evelyn Stooksbury began working for Holland Home when it opened in South Holland in 1973. She recently retired after 34 years of service to spend more time finishing projects around the house, volunteering at her church, visiting her sister in California, and traveling around the country to spend time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. “I’m sure I’ll have boring days once I retire, but I’ll keep busy,” she winks.
