2007 was a year of “Life Enhancements” for Victorian Village
|
Homer Glen, Ill. (Monday, December 17, 2007) – Residents of Homer Glen’s Victorian Village invited the surrounding community to celebrate all the major holidays throughout 2007. A Dessert Fair, an Easter egg hunt, a Mothers Day tea, safe trick-or-treating, and a special presentation about Chicago’s Christmas Tree Ship were a few of the events that marked a typically active and community-focused year for staff and residents.
In addition, Victorian Village hosted a visit from State Senator Christine Radogno in November. “She had only 45 minutes in her schedule,” says General Manager Mike Venzon, “but she specifically requested to visit our campus because of our reputation in this area. That means a lot to me.” Senator Radogno accepted a Life Services Network “Partner in Quality” award, addressed remarks to the residents who had gathered to meet her, and toured the campus, asking questions about the amenities and services.
Victorian Village ended 2007 by becoming one of the first communities in Illinois whose Assisted Living services received the new two-year license from the Illinois Department of Public Health. “Being granted a two-year license is a vote of confidence in us from the state,” says Venzon. “And it means we can spend more time enhancing resident life rather than filling out annual paperwork!”
Perhaps the most meaningful highlight from the past year, according to Venzon, is the Alzheimer’s Support Group that began meeting monthly on campus, under the leadership of
Kathy Bradley, Victorian Village’s Director of Assisted Living. The group’s kick-off event in September featured a presentation by Rush University’s Pam Smith, M.Ad.Ed. “The relationships we have with high-quality people give me hope that we will conquer this terrible disease one day,” says Venzon. “We are passionate about letting our community know about these support group meetings because hope will spring eternal only if folks know there are people dedicated to (1) research—the creation of new knowledge, (2) education—the dissemination of knowledge, and (3) practice—the application of that knowledge.” The Alzheimer’s Support Group continues to meet on the first Thursday of every month, and the Victorian Village team encourages families dealing with Alzheimer’s to make the meetings part of their 2008 New Year’s resolutions.
