Palos Heights, Ill. (May 20, 2006) – Henrietta “Etta” Ruder, resident of Rest Haven Central retirement community, will celebrate her 102nd birthday on May 20, 2006. Family members, fellow residents, and staff will join Henrietta from 2:00–3:00pm in a community-wide party in her honor.
“She has a lot of good health factors in her favor,” says Diane Giglio, Activities Director at Rest Haven Central, citing Etta’s love of exercise, strong family relationships, and good genes (Etta’s mother lived to be 103).
Etta was born in Harvey, Illinois, where she and her eight brothers and sisters spent a happy childhood. “We had a nice family life,” said Darlene, one of Etta’s sisters, who relayed memories of their father playing an old, Italian, button accordion while the family danced. “It seemed like Henrietta danced since the time she was born,” laughed Darlene.
At the age of 16, Etta moved with her family to a farm in Monee, which is where she eventually met her husband Herbert. After their marriage, Etta and Herbert attended the German Church in Monee. Henrietta kept house, and Herbert farmed their land as well as working for Triem Steel Company in Chicago Heights.
After Herbert’s death, Etta joined one of her sisters in Minnesota for a few years before eventually returning to Illinois and moving in with sister Darlene. She has lived at Rest Haven Central for more than two years.
